A vehicle crashed into the Rapid City Police Department’s Southwest Precinct, early Sunday morning causing significant damage to the building located at the intersection of Catron Boulevard and Sheridan Lake Road.
According to video surveillance and the initial investigation, a 2002 GMC Yukon was heading south on Sheridan Lake Road when it attempted to turn east onto Catron Boulevard. The vehicle struck the median during the turn, lost control, veered into oncoming lanes, then circled back northbound, jumped a curb, descended a small embankment, and ultimately collided with the precinct building.
The driver, identified as 36-year-old Kelsey Herrald of Rapid City, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was ejected before impact. Responding officers detected the smell of alcohol and observed signs of impairment. A preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .217—nearly three times the legal limit.
Herrald was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was later arrested on charges including DUI (2nd offense), No Insurance, and Driving Without a Valid License.
No officers were inside the building at the time of the crash, as they were out on patrol. The incident remains under investigation.
