The South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) has officially submitted its Final Proposal for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program to the National Telecommunications and Information Association (NTIA). This marks a major step forward in the state’s efforts to expand high-speed internet access to underserved communities.
Developed in alignment with federal guidelines outlined in the BEAD Program Notice of Funding Opportunity and the BEAD Restructuring Policy Notice, the proposal outlines strategic plans to close the digital divide across South Dakota.
As part of the initiative, four preliminary awardees have been selected to receive funding for broadband infrastructure projects. These projects aim to bring reliable internet service to 6,992 locations statewide—targeting every remaining unserved and underserved area.
Connectivity solutions will include fiber-to-the-premises, licensed fixed wireless, and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, ensuring a robust and future-ready network for South Dakotans.
The proposal now awaits NTIA review and approval, which would unlock federal resources to begin implementation.
