A 43-year-old man from Wolsey, South Dakota died following his arrest late Friday night prompting an independent investigation by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
Around 11:00 p.m. Friday, a Rapid City police officer spotted the man—who was known to law enforcement and had active warrants—in the 1300 block of Mt. Rushmore Road. When officers attempted to make contact, the man fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, he was apprehended but remained combative with officers.
Due to his behavior, police placed him in the WRAP safety restraint system, along with a spit mask and padded helmet, before transporting him to the Pennington County Jail. During the arrest, officers discovered syringes and suspected illegal narcotics in his possession.
Upon arrival at the jail, the man was found to be unresponsive. Officers administered emergency life-saving measures, and he was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The South Dakota DCI has taken over the investigation to conduct an independent, third-party review of the incident. Authorities have not released the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.
