The latest drought monitor report showed vast improvement thanks to much needed rains in the central part of South Dakota. Tuesday’s report showed just under 82 percent of the state is drought free compared to 73 percent a week ago. Areas reporting severe drought dropped dramatically from 7.5 percent last week to 2.5 percent this week as portions of central and southwestern South Dakota moved from severe drought to abnormally dry or no drought. The 20 percent of the state reporting abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions is isolated to extreme Southern South Dakota mostly west of the Missouri River.
