A coordinated inmate attack at the Jameson Annex of the South Dakota State Penitentiary left six inmates stabbed Thursday evening around 6 p.m., according to Attorney General Marty Jackley.
Five of the injured were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening wounds. Jackley said the violence began when inmates from Section 2 gained access to Section 1, sparking the altercation.
Officials believe four homemade weapons were used; three have been recovered. Surveillance footage is being reviewed to determine the number of suspects involved. Charges are expected soon.
The sixth inmate’s condition remains unknown. The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the inquiry, and the Department of Corrections has declined to release further details while the investigation continues.
This follows a separate incident in May that resulted in 14 injuries and led to indictments for 24 inmates. The situation remains under review.
