Rapid City residents will have the opportunity to vote on whether to approve a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district for the proposed Libertyland development. The decision comes after a successful petition effort gathered enough signatures to place the issue on the ballot.
The Libertyland project, which includes plans for a large indoor water park and hotel complex, has sparked debate over the use of public financing. The City Finance office said 4,326 of the 5,145 petition signatures received were valid. 2,572 signatures were needed to force the public vote.
City officials had previously approved the TIF, but the petition—led by concerned citizens—triggered a public vote. The election date will be set next Monday at the next Rapid City Council Meeting.
