UPDATE:
Hill City Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported wildland fire in the Gertie Rd area, approximately one mile south west of the city limits of Hill City, Un-incorporated Pennington County South Dakota.
First arriving Firefighters observed an active fire burning in cured grass and timber and immediately attacked the fire.
As of 3:00 PM, Wednesday October 1st 2025 the fire named the “Gertie Fire” is contained at 18 acres.
Firefighters will remain on the fire today, conducting mop-up and holding operations. Active suppression operations will continue on Thursday, October 2nd.
There will be an active smoke condition throughout the evening and overnight hours, extending into Thursday.
The fire remains under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service/Black Hills National Forest.
No injuries to Firefighters, civilians, domestic animals, or livestock was reported.

Firefighters from multiple agencies are battling the Gertie Fire, burning approximately 1 mile west of Hill City in the Cowboy Gulch area. The blaze, estimated at 3 to 5 acres, prompted a coordinated response that includes engines, water tenders, a dozer, a hand crew, and a fire investigator.
While no evacuations are currently in effect, smoke is visible throughout Hill City and nearby areas. Officials urge residents not to call 911 about smoke sightings, as emergency crews are actively managing the situation.
