At its Wednesday meeting, Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee approved two funding proposals—and voted to move forward with a plan to secure money from a national opioid settlement.
The committee unanimously supported a revised plan to upgrade the Rapid City Soccer Complex, following an earlier $3.5 million Vision Fund request from the Black Hills Rapids soccer organization. Due to limited Vision Fund resources, the initial request was denied, but city officials encouraged a scaled-back version.
The updated plan includes a $500,000 city contribution and a $5 million, zero-interest loan to be repaid over ten years. The proposal now heads to the City Council for final approval on Monday.
In a separate vote, the committee authorized up to $75,000 in emergency funds to repair the Southwest Precinct of the Rapid City Police Department, which was struck by a vehicle on September 21. The driver was found to be more than three times over the legal alcohol limit. RCQC Construction was selected for the repairs, with assistance from a retired contractor familiar with the building’s 2023 renovation.
The committee voted to authorize the $25 million dollar portion of the settlement plus $500,000 from a previous Purdue Pharma agreement.
All proposals will be considered by the full City Council on October 6.
