South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF) is urging residents to exercise extreme caution on Friday, October 3, 2025, as critical fire weather conditions are forecasted for large portions of western and southwestern South Dakota.
A combination of dry vegetation—including tall grass and small brush—low humidity, temperatures ranging from the 80s to mid-90s, and strong, gusty winds will create highly favorable conditions for wildland fires to ignite and spread rapidly.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the region. Cities within the warning area include Rapid City, Hot Springs, Wall, Pine Ridge, Kadoka, and Faith. Residents are encouraged to consult the attached map to determine if they are within the affected zone.
SDWF strongly advises against any activities that could spark a fire. This includes outdoor burning, using equipment that produces sparks, operating earth-moving machinery, dragging trailer chains, discarding cigarette butts from vehicles, and parking in tall grass.
If you spot a wildland fire, call 911 immediately. Fires under these conditions can escalate quickly and pose serious risks.
