Nearly 11,000 South Dakotans could lose their health coverage by the end of 2025 if Congress fails to extend key tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. The Enhanced Premium Tax Credit, introduced in 2021, caps insurance premiums at 8.5% of income—even for those earning above 400% of the federal poverty level—and offers greater subsidies for lower-income families.
Open enrollment begins November 1 and runs through January 15. Without an extension, premiums could rise by an average of 18%, with some doubling in cost.
Experts say the credit has been vital for self-employed individuals and small business workers, who often lack employer-sponsored insurance.
While base-level subsidies will remain, officials urge South Dakotans to explore their options on the ACA marketplace and consider working with trusted agents to find the best plan.
