A accident claimed the lives of five individuals late Wednesday night in a single-vehicle crash on South Dakota Highway 44, approximately three miles east of Scenic.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, pending notification of their families.
According to a statement from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred just before midnight. A Honda Pilot traveling eastbound near mile marker 90 lost control while navigating a curve. The vehicle veered into a ditch and collided with a concrete barrier, subsequently catching fire.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Officials say more information will be shared as it becomes available.
