The Rapid City Council voted unanimously Monday to hold a special election on January 20, 2026, allowing residents to decide whether taxpayer funds should support the development of Libertyland, a proposed themed attraction.
The decision follows a successful petition drive by thousands of residents, with Finance Director Daniel Ainslie confirming all signatures were verified and valid.
Libertyland’s proposed location falls within the city’s tax increment finance zone known as the Rapid City Destination District.
