At Monday’s Deadwood City Commission meeting, officials acknowledged that a recall petition against Commissioner Blake Joseph met the required number of valid signatures. However, they postponed setting a special election date, citing legal advice from an election law attorney. A special meeting is planned for October 14 to potentially schedule the vote.
The delay follows Joseph’s filing of a petition for injunctive relief and a temporary restraining order against City Finance Officer Jessicca McKeown. Joseph claims he was denied access to petition-related documents, preventing him from challenging the recall within the legal five-day window. A hearing on the injunction is set for December 1.
The recall petition, submitted September 26, accuses Joseph of misconduct, abuse of office, and gross partiality.
