The trial of Ezekiel Mayweather has reached its final stage, with the jury now deliberating his fate. The 24-year-old faces charges of aiding and abetting, as well as conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, in connection with the February 2024 shooting death of Esther Wolfe on East North Street.
After weeks of testimony from 40 witnesses and the presentation of more than 155 exhibits, both prosecution and defense delivered closing arguments Wednesday in a packed courtroom.
Prosecutors emphasized Mayweather’s ties to Wolfe, surveillance footage placing him at the scene throughout the day, and video showing him dropping off Arkadius Wright—who later admitted to killing Wolfe. Mayweather is also accused of helping dispose of the murder weapon.
Wright, originally charged with murder, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing in December. He faces up to life in prison.
Mayweather’s defense challenged the credibility of key witnesses and questioned the plea deal offered to Wright. They also pointed to inconsistencies in testimony and argued that the evidence failed to prove a coordinated plan necessary for a conspiracy conviction.
