The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission met October 9 at the Beeler Community Center in Lemmon, where they advanced a proposal to increase resident access to bison hunting licenses in Custer State Park.
Originally introduced as a petition in September, the proposal would allocate 60% of Trophy and Non-Trophy Bison licenses exclusively to South Dakota residents during the first draw. The remaining 40% would be open to both residents and nonresidents.
The plan also raises the maximum number of licenses to 15 Trophy and 30 Non-Trophy tags, up from the previous cap of 10 and 20 respectively. Final allocations will depend on forage and herd conditions.
Public comments are being accepted through November 2 at 11:59 p.m. CDT. Comments must include a full name and city of residence to be considered. Full proposal details and meeting audio are available at gfp.sd.gov/commission/information.
The next GFP Commission meeting is scheduled for November 6 in Rapid City.
