Despite the ongoing government shutdown, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) last week, allocating $378 million for projects at Ellsworth Air Force Base to support the B-21 bomber program. The House approved its version of the NDAA earlier, and both chambers are now working to finalize a joint authorization plan.
Senator Mike Rounds expressed confidence that the funding for Ellsworth will remain intact through the process. He noted that while the shutdown could pose challenges, the authorization appears to be on track. The next step is the appropriations process, which gives final approval for spending. Rounds said he doesn’t expect major changes but will continue monitoring developments.
The funding will support construction of B-21 housing units, a flight simulator, and an Alert facility. Rounds emphasized that investing in infrastructure helps shield Ellsworth from potential future closures under the Air Force Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. He added that runway upgrades and other improvements will further strengthen the base’s long-term viability.
