One year after South Dakota lawmakers earmarked $10 million for airport improvements, Rapid City Regional Airport has received final approval to move ahead with a major terminal expansion.
The state Aeronautics Commission voted unanimously Thursday to contribute $3.46 million toward a new ticketing and baggage area. The Federal Aviation Administration is providing $20 million for that project and an additional $5.56 million for a new TSA checkpoint. Local sources have committed over $1.3 million combined for both upgrades.
The commission also approved FAA grants for other airports including Pine Ridge: $184,300 for a blower and sweeper, with $4,850 each from local and state sources.
Sturgis: $3.08 million for a parallel taxiway, with $81,110 from the state and $81,109 locally.
The commission also approvedĀ a $1,000 reimbursement to the hosts of the Black Hills Fly-In held in Spearfish and Setting a 75% reimbursement rate for weather cameras, including $10,809.71 for the system at the Spearfish airport.
