South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has appointed Nick Lamb as the next Secretary of the Department of Corrections, following a nationwide search. Lamb will officially begin his role in mid-November, succeeding Secretary Kellie Wasko, who is stepping down after more than three years of service.
Deputy Secretary Brent Fluke will serve as interim secretary starting today until Lamb assumes the position.
Governor Rhoden praised Lamb’s extensive background in corrections and military service, And brings over three decades of experience in corrections, having held leadership roles in Illinois, New Mexico, and Iowa. Most recently, he served as Deputy Director of Institutional Operations for the Iowa Department of Corrections, overseeing nine facilities and managing 2,500 staff and 8,500 inmates.
A retired Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard, Lamb served for 21 years across three states and earned multiple commendations, including the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Combat Action Badge.
Lamb holds a master’s degree in psychology and is a proud father of seven, with 15 grandchildren.
