U.S. Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) voiced strong opposition to increased Argentinian beef imports following discussions with President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins. Rounds said he’s heard from hundreds of South Dakota ranchers concerned about the impact on domestic producers.
Rounds argued that just as domestic energy production lowered prices, boosting U.S. beef supply should be the strategy—not relying on foreign imports.
Rounds criticized current labeling rules that prevent consumers from distinguishing between domestic and imported beef, calling for renewed attention to Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL). He also pointed to market consolidation, noting that four companies—two Brazilian-owned—dominate beef processing.
Rounds emphasized the need to build broader Senate support for reforms, especially amid the government shutdown, and urged consumers and ranchers to continue sharing their views with the administration.
