Rapid City’s Parks & Recreation Department has been developing a comprehensive master plan for the city’s parks since March, aiming to ensure the system continues to serve the needs of residents. The department held an open house yesterday to gather direct community feedback and share updates on the planning process.
The master plan, now seven months in the making, places a strong emphasis on public input. Landscape Architect Melissa Petersen noted that data collected from over 500 mailed questionnaires and additional community outreach has helped identify key priorities, including restrooms, more neighborhood and community parks, picnic areas, and paved paths for biking, walking, and hiking.
The final version of the plan is expected in early 2026.
