Governor Larry Rhoden announced a plan to support expansion efforts at the Sioux Falls and Rapid City airports through proposed legislation offering zero-interest loans of up to $15 million for each facility. The initiative aims to accommodate rising passenger traffic and enhance South Dakota’s connectivity with more gates, flights, and destinations.
Since 2019, Rapid City airport traffic has grown by 30%, while Sioux Falls has seen a 25% increase. Rhoden emphasized that the investment will benefit all South Dakotans and reinforce the state’s commitment to economic opportunity.
The funding will come from the remaining $65 million in career housing loan funds originally set aside in 2023. These funds will be transferred to the REDI (Revolving Economic Development and Initiative) Fund, with loans required to close by June 30, 2030. The approach mirrors a successful model used to support the Douglas School District and will not add costs for taxpayers.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport Friday, with leaders from both cities in attendance.
