Rapid City’s Legal & Finance Committee has unanimously approved a resolution to revise solid waste fees, including charges for landfill use and garbage pickup account activation. The proposal now heads to the City Council for final approval.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Finance Director Daniel Ainslie highlighted the financial strain of the city’s recycling program, which costs Rapid City about $4 million annually while diverting only 4–5% of waste. Despite the cost, recycling remains a permit requirement, and any changes would require coordination with the state government.
If approved, the new fees will take effect January 1. Full pricing details are available on the Rapid City Government website.
