Despite the ongoing government shutdown, Rapid City Regional Airport has remained largely unaffected. Air traffic controllers under contract and TSA agents continuing to report for duty have helped maintain normal operations.
However, Executive Director Patrick Dame noted that passengers are experiencing delays at other airports.
Staffing shortages among air traffic controllers have led to delays in major hubs including New York, Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that safety remains the top priority, even if it means delaying or canceling flights.
