As winter approaches, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission is reminding residents to keep natural gas meters and appliance vents clear of snow and ice—a step that has prevented serious damage and even home loss in past winters.
“Snow and ice buildup can cause leaks and malfunctions,” said PUC Chairman Gary Hanson. He advises gently clearing meters with a broom or hands—never with hard objects—and contacting your gas provider if ice is too thick to remove safely.
PUC Vice Chairman Chris Nelson stressed the importance of keeping furnace and appliance vents unobstructed to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Warning signs of a gas leak include a rotten egg smell, mist or fog near the meter, and hissing sounds.
Commissioner Kristie Fiegen recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors and teaching children basic safety tips, like recognizing the smell of gas and knowing to leave quickly if they detect it. She also encourages families to create emergency plans.
