South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has confirmed that the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting an investigation into the death of an inmate at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
The inmate, identified as Travis Long Fox, was hospitalized on Tuesday and passed away on Friday. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
Long Fox was serving sentences for receiving/transferring a stolen vehicle from Pennington County, grand theft from Hughes County, intentional damage to property and third-degree burglary from Stanley County, second-degree burglary from Sully County, and possession of a controlled substance from Minnehaha County.
Attorney General Jackley noted. “If criminal charges are appropriate, they will be announced at the proper time.”
This marks the fifth inmate death under investigation by DCI since February. Two individuals, Manarion Fuse and Melibu Ross, are scheduled to stand trial in January 2026 for allegedly distributing controlled substances that resulted in the deaths of two separate inmates. Investigations into the remaining two cases are ongoing.
