Governor Larry Rhoden announced South Dakota will join President Donald J. Trump’s school choice initiative, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill. The program allows individuals to donate up to $1,700 to approved scholarship organizations in exchange for a 100% nonrefundable federal tax credit, starting January 2027. These funds will support families seeking alternative education options like microschools, classical schools, or supplemental public school programs.
During a press conference held Friday in Sioux Falls, Rhoden said, “Parents should have the freedom to choose the best learning environment for their children,” “This is a win for taxpayers, schools, and students.”
The announcement comes amid rising interest in homeschooling and innovative education models.
