The Rapid City, Pierre, and Eastern Railroad (RCPE) is wrapping up a multi-year public-private infrastructure project that has significantly modernized its main line between Fort Pierre and Rapid City. With construction nearing completion, RCPE is set to implement a long-anticipated increase in train speeds along the corridor—from 25 mph up to 40 mph.
Ryan Englebright, RCPE General Manager says the investment will benefit West River businesses with safer, faster, and more reliable service.
The $84 million initiative was made possible through a U.S. Department of Transportation grant, along with contributions from the State of South Dakota and RCPE itself. The project included 88 miles of track upgraded with continuously welded rail and over 80,000 new cross-ties installed.
As train speeds increase, RCPE reminds the public to remain vigilant near railroad tracks and crossings. Always obey posted signs and signals, and remember: trains can travel on the main line at any time, from any direction—day or night.
