An inmate at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, South Dakota was found unresponsive in his bed and later passed away at a nearby hospital. Timothy Tyree, age 46, was serving a sentence for possession of a controlled substance from Minnehaha County. The Division of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General are investigating the death as a suspected drug overdose. This incident marks the seventh inmate death investigated by DCI since February, with two cases resulting in criminal felony charges set for trial in January. The facility also reported an unrelated death last Friday as 44 year old Shane Osterkamp died last Friday in a comfort care setting. Osterkamp was serving sentences from Hughes and Sully Counties at the time of his death. Tyree was the 22nd inmate to die in DOC custody this year.
