A fire broke out early Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Coeur Wharf mine, located about 12 miles outside Lead. The blaze began around 6:55 a.m. during scheduled maintenance at the mine’s crushing facility.
Multiple Northern Hills fire departments responded, and the fire was fully extinguished by 11 a.m. Four workers were treated for smoke inhalation and later cleared to return to work.
“All on-site personnel are accounted for,” said Ken Nelson, the mine’s regional general manager.
