UPDATE
A residential fire in rural Box Elder claimed the life of a man and his dog Sunday night.
At 8:51 p.m. on November 23, firefighters and law enforcement responded to reports of a structure fire at 125 Westgate Road. Crews arriving at lot 109 found heavy flames and smoke inside the residence.
After containing the blaze, responders discovered a deceased male and a dog inside. Authorities say the man’s identity will be released once next of kin have been notified. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the South Dakota Fire Marshal and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Box Elder Police Department, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and fire departments from Box Elder, New Underwood, Rapid Valley, Rapid City, Black Hawk, North Haines, Whispering Pines, and Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Dozens of fire units responded last night to a mobile home fire at Whispering Willows Mobile Home Park, located just north of Interstate 90, officials said.
The blaze was brought under control, though crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots and assess damage.
Authorities have not yet released information on possible injuries or the number of homes affected. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and officials say updates will be provided as more details become available.
