The South Dakota High School Athletic Association (SDHSAA) is alerting fans to potential credit card fraud following the state volleyball tournament held November 22.
In a news release, SDHSAA said parents and fans from O’Gorman and Harrisburg reported unauthorized charges after attending the championship matches. Officials believe the activity may be linked to credit card skimming by someone in the crowd.
“We want to make sure everyone who attended is aware of the situation,” the association stated. “Please check your accounts carefully and report any suspicious activity to your financial institution.”
What Happened
• Reports of fraudulent charges surfaced shortly after the tournament.
• Victims say their cards were compromised after being used at or near the event.
• Investigators suspect skimming devices or individuals targeting attendees.
Advice for Attendees
SDHSAA is urging anyone who attended the tournament to:
• Review recent transactions on their credit and debit cards.
• Report unauthorized charges immediately to their bank or card issuer.
• Consider setting up fraud alerts or transaction notifications for added protection.
Credit card skimming — where thieves capture card information using hidden devices or digital scanners — has become increasingly common at large public events. Law enforcement agencies across the Midwest have warned that crowded venues can be prime targets for such schemes.
The SDHSAA said it is cooperating with local authorities to investigate the reports and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
