A California man has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges following a single-vehicle rollover that killed a passenger early Friday morning in Pennington County.
Authorities say Nicholas Foltz, 37, of Fort Bidwell, California, was taken into custody after law enforcement and medics responded to the crash on Bombing Range Road near Scenic in the early hours of Nov. 28.
According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, first responders found the passenger 25 year-old Thomas Barlese, of Kyle, SD, dead at the scene. Foltz, who was driving the vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies arrested Foltz after an initial investigation, charging him with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or an intoxicant.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, the National Park Service, and the Rapid City Fire Department.
