A Pine Ridge man has been sentenced to three years and 10 months in federal prison for a drunk-driving crash that killed a woman.
Kevin Hunter, 33, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after driving 80 mph under the influence in Oglala Lakota County on May 15, 2024. His vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a van, killing a mother who was a passenger.
At sentencing Monday, U.S. District Judge Camela Theeler noted Hunter’s repeated DUI convictions — his sixth offense — and called his behavior “concerning.”
Hunter’s attorney argued for probation, citing severe alcohol abuse and the need for treatment, but prosecutors pressed for prison time, saying it was “a miracle” Hunter hadn’t killed someone sooner.
Hunter will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
