Repairs to water-damaged plaster at the South Dakota Capitol will be complete before lawmakers return for the 2026 legislative session in January.
Commissioner Darin Seeley told the Joint Appropriations Committee the work is the first step in a three‑phase restoration funded by $3 million approved earlier this year.
Phase two, focused on the Rotunda, will begin after the session ends in March and wrap up by November. Phase three will use $780,000 to hire a consultant for a full needs assessment of the Capitol complex, including upgrades to communications, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Seeley said the building, last fully restored about 40 years ago, could eventually require $150–$200 million in improvements. The Capitol was completed in 1910.
