Police responded to two separate reports of gunfire in Rapid City Wednesday evening, with one leading to the arrest of a local man.
At approximately 8:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 800 block of East Minnesota following a report of a gunshot. Investigators determined that a firearm had been discharged inside one apartment, with the round traveling through a wall and into a neighboring unit.
The occupant, identified as 51-year-old Nicholas Murphy of Rapid City, was detained at the scene. A search warrant executed at Murphy’s residence uncovered a handgun, ammunition, drug paraphernalia, and a substance believed to be marijuana wax. Officers also discovered a bullet hole in the wall concealed behind a flag.
Murphy was arrested on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail. Authorities confirmed that no injuries resulted from the incident.
Later that evening, at around 9:29 p.m., officers received a separate report of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of Waterloo Street. A search of the area did not reveal shell casings or property damage. The case has been referred to the Rapid City Police Department Criminal Investigations Division for further review.
Police continue to investigate both incidents.
