The National Weather Service is issuing a High Wind Warning for the entire region until about 2am. Northwest winds of 35-45 mph are expected with gusts over 60.
While the winds will fuel warm temperatures in the mid to upper 50’s, conditions will drive the Rangeland fire danger index to the extreme category especially along the eastern slopes of the Black hills.
Rapid City will be under an air quality advisory due to the high winds blowing potential pollutants. The Rapid City Air Quality Office recommends the elderly, young, and anyone with respiratory problems avoid excessive physical exertion and exposure to the outside air. DANR and the Air Quality Office also recommend voluntary actions to be taken to reduce dust pollution including ceasing or reducing the manipulation of soil in construction, industrial, and agricultural activities and increasing the use of pollution controls for soil stabilization, waste pits , stock piles and construction sites.
Real time monitoring is available online.
