Governor Larry Rhoden is seeking to upgrade the National Guard readiness center in Sturgis with $2.4 million in state funds to leverage $8 million in federal funds. The current center is deemed too small and outdated, lacking dedicated classrooms.
Rhoden also proposes $30 million in federal funding for a new 37,000 square foot vehicle maintenance shop adjacent to the readiness center to accommodate larger military vehicles.
South Dakota National Guard Colonel Dana Limbo agrees with the need for updated facilities to support modern equipment, emphasizing the importance of supporting the National Guard in light of recent events.
