Governor Larry Rhoden has asked Attorney General Marty Jackley to investigate a new abortion pill ad campaign in South Dakota, saying it conflicts with the state’s pro-life laws. Jackley agreed to review the ads and take action if violations are found.
The campaign, run by Mayday Health, places abortion pill ads at 30 gas stations in 20 cities. Officials argue it may violate state statutes or constitute deceptive trade practices.
Rhoden emphasized South Dakota’s strong pro-life stance, warning that chemical abortions pose health risks to mothers. He pledged to work with Jackley on possible legislation.
South Dakota banned telemedicine chemical abortions in 2022, and abortion became illegal except to save the mother’s life after the Dobbs decision. Voters reaffirmed that position by rejecting Amendment G in 2024.
