From December 12 through January 1, 2026, South Dakota law enforcement will intensify efforts against impaired driving as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
The winter holidays are among the deadliest times for alcohol-related crashes. Between 2019 and 2023, 4,931 people nationwide were killed in December crashes involving impaired drivers; South Dakota saw 15 deaths and 237 injuries during that period.
Officials stress that driving under the influence is illegal and dangerous. They urge residents to plan ahead, use designated drivers or rideshare services, and step in if friends attempt to drive after drinking. Anyone who spots an impaired driver should contact law enforcement immediately.
