The Rapid City Fire Department is seeking recruits for its Veterans Wildland Fuel Module, a nationally recognized program that helps military veterans transition into civilian careers while reducing wildfire risk in the community.
Formed in 2013 through a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the crew focuses on both wildfire mitigation and veteran reintegration. Wildland Fire Mitigation Crew Captain Eric O’Connor says the program gives veterans “a sense of pride and purpose,” while Lieutenant Jeremy Atwell, himself a veteran, describes it as a way to regain camaraderie and mission after military service.
