Governor Larry Rhoden and State Senator Casey Crabtree announced plans to remove suppressors from South Dakota’s list of controlled weapons. While federal regulations and background checks would still apply, Rhoden’s office says the move signals support for broader deregulation nationwide.
NRA State Director Brian Gosch backed the effort, calling suppressors “all about hearing protection.” While Rhoden told KOTA Territory News the change reflects respect for Second Amendment rights, noting suppressors “shouldn’t have been on that list in the first place.”
Crabtree added the proposal builds on recent federal changes, including the elimination of the $200 tax stamp for suppressor purchases, set to expire next month.
