With the forecasted snow projected for the Rapid City area later today into Saturday, City crews initiated brine treatment of main lines last evening and overnight and will be brining Level A hill areas today.
Brine is a solution used as part of the City’s snow removal process and applied before a snowfall. It lowers the freezing point of water, preventing ice from bonding to surfaces.
As a reminder, during the winter season and an active snow event, the City uses a targeted response, based on the adopted policy. For several years, snow plowing and treatment efforts are divided into three levels of service:
- Level A: In a level A response, crews are focusing efforts on main roads, emergency routes, steep streets and busy intersections, including downtown snow removal and road treatment. Crews will then move into the other areas.
- Level B: Smaller roads and high-traffic residential streets, plus Level A areas and continued downtown snow removal and road treatment.
- Level C: All other streets.
