Local government representatives in Sturgis are proposing to use a portion of excise tax from construction at Ellsworth Air Force Base to fund road repairs in Meade and Pennington County.
The Ellsworth Excise Tax Coalition was formed to address the impact of increased construction at the base on local roadways. The coalition aims to pass legislation in 2026 to allocate up to $8 million for road repairs from the excise tax.
Meade County Commission is being asked to join the coalition, which will also involve the city of Box Elder, Rapid City, and Pennington County.
