South Dakota’s snowmobile season officially opened Dec. 15 with the statewide trail system. Officials caution that many trails, especially in the Black Hills, lack enough snow for grooming. Riders are reminded the system crosses leased private property, is for snowmobiles only, and excludes UTVs and ATVs.
New 2025–26 trail maps are available at businesses along the routes or by request, and current trail conditions can be viewed online at gfp.sd.gov/snowmobiling. East River trails have seen a stronger start, supported by volunteers who placed signs across 952 miles.
While South Dakota does not require certification, GFP encourages riders to complete a snowmobile safety course, available online or through local clubs. The season runs through March 31.
