The Salvation Army of the Black Hills has received its third gold coin of the holiday season, continuing a long-running mystery tradition.
The newest donation—an Austrian gold coin worth nearly $4,500—was dropped into a counter kettle at Lueders Food Center in Spearfish. Earlier in the season, two 1‑ounce American Gold Eagle coins valued at about $4,000 each were also donated, one of them in Spearfish as well.
Anonymous gold coin gifts have become a beloved tradition for the local Salvation Army, often wrapped in Peanuts-themed paper, though only one arrived wrapped this year.
Major Daniel Voss, Black Hills Area Coordinator says “The money that comes in the kettle is used year-round for our budget.”
Voss said receiving three coins this season was especially exciting and expressed gratitude for all contributions to the Red Kettle campaign.
With the holiday season wrapped up, the Salvation Army’s red kettles have now been brought indoors
