Governor Larry Rhoden has ordered flags at the South Dakota State Capitol to be flown at half‑staff from sunrise until sunset on Friday, January 9, 2026, in honor of former state legislator Harvey Krautschun.
Krautschun, a longtime public servant from the Spearfish area, served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 1985 to 1996. During his final term, he was selected by his colleagues to serve as Speaker of the House, holding the chamber’s top leadership position from 1995 to 1996.
State officials described the half‑staff order as a tribute to Krautschun’s years of dedication to South Dakota and his impact on state policy throughout more than a decade in office.
A funeral service for Krautschun will be held at 2:00 p.m. CT / 1:00 p.m. MT on Friday, January 9, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.
