The City of Sturgis has taken another step toward a major recreation expansion east of town. On Monday, the city council approved submitting a letter of interest to the Bureau of Land Management to begin the leasing process for potential new soccer fields on BLM land.
The Sturgis Soccer Association is proposing a multi‑phase complex on a 56‑acre site across Highway 34 from Sturgis Brown High School, adjacent to 177 acres the city is already developing with softball fields, trails, and an outdoor learning center. Association president Richelle Bruch said the location offers room for long‑term growth in sports and outdoor recreation.
The nearly 50‑year‑old association now serves more than 300 youth players, and its current city‑park fields lack space, parking, and expansion options. A new complex would allow larger tournaments and bring added economic activity to Sturgis.
The BLM review process—evaluating land suitability, environmental needs, and project feasibility—could take one to three years. Mayor Kevin Forrester said he’s optimistic the project can move forward with support from state and federal partners.
The complex is expected to cost well over $1 million, funded through a mix of city contributions, grants, sponsors, and the soccer association.
