Custer State Park has reopened to visitors following a powerful December windstorm, but officials are urging people to stay alert, particularly around damaged trees.
Parks regional supervisor Matt Snyder told South Dakota Searchlight that visitors should remain aware of overhead hazards.
The storm brought wind gusts reaching 101 miles per hour, toppling thousands of trees and damaging campsites and park facilities. Governor Larry Rhoden has requested federal assistance to support recovery efforts.
Dozens of state employees have been working on cleanup, and officials expect the damaged areas and facilities to be fully reopened by April.
