County officials have issued a ban on open burning as fire danger conditions are in the very high category across the region.
The restriction prohibits all open burning, including burn piles, slash burning, unenclosed fires, and any fire without a chimney or ducted stack. Burn barrels are also not allowed under today’s conditions.
The ban is authorized under Pennington County Ordinance #726, approved in 2021, which allows the county to halt open burning when the National Weather Service Grassland Fire Danger Index indicates elevated risk.
Violating the ban carries a $500 fine or up to 30 days in jail.
County officials urge residents to follow the restriction and remain cautious as dry and windy conditions increase the potential for fast‑moving fires.
