A former Rapid City athlete was killed Wednesday morning in a bus crash involving the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team in rural Calhoun County, Iowa.
The victim was identified as Carter Johnson, a former Stevens High School and Post 22 baseball standout. Johnson was an outfielder for Iowa Lakes Community College.
College officials confirmed the team was traveling to Arkansas for games later this week when their bus went off Iowa Highway 4 near Twin Lakes shortly after 11 a.m. The bus, carrying 33 people, left the roadway and overturned in a ditch.
According to Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol, Johnson was the only fatality but multiple others suffered serious injuries. Emergency crews responded immediately and transported all remaining passengers to area hospitals. UnityPoint Health reported that 10 patients were taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, while two others were transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
The Iowa DOT reported a detour around the crash site, located about a mile north of U.S. Highway 20.
The team was en route to Harrison, Arkansas, for scheduled games against North Arkansas College on Thursday and Friday.
No other vehicles were involved. The crash remains under investigation.
